Washington's Rapid Watershed Assessments (RWA's)

Updated 08/29/2007

A Rapid Watershed Assessment (RWA) is a set of initial estimates of where conservation investments might best address local resource concerns. The information is intended to be used along with other relevant information to assist individuals, communities, non-profits, local, state and federal entities and others to evaluate future conservation activities on a watershed basis.

The assessments for each completed watershed are listed below. Each assessment is divided into two parts:

  • The RWA Profile contains a general watershed overview, physical description, resource concerns, Farm Bill programs addressed in the watershed, technical reports describing pertinent studies completed within the watershed and a bibliography.

  • The RWA Matrices uses the information gathered from the watershed profile and knowledge from NRCS staff and other local conservation professionals. The main utility for the matrices will be by the local NRCS field offices.
The following topics are addressed for each landuse planning category in each watershed:
    •     Quantify resource concerns,
    •     Identify the extent of conservation practices that could be used to solve resource concerns,
    •     Estimate producer participation needed,
    •     Assume cost share rates,
    •     Project changes into the future five year planning horizon.
