Skipanon Watershed Project

A PL-566 project was constructed on the Skipanon River during the period 1962 – 1967.  The project consisted of channel improvements, the installation of a tidegates near the mouth of the river, and two upstream water control structures (the first at the outlet of Cullaby Lake and second about one mile downstream from the lake). The purpose of the tidegates were to mitigate tidal influenced flooding in the lower Skipanon River while the purpose of the upper structures were to maintain water levels in the lake for recreational purposes and prevent subsidence of peat soils in the floodplain.

Concerns have developed about the adequacy of fish passage through the tidegate structure and water quality upstream of the gates due to lack of flushing during summer months.  Hydraulic modeling is being done using UNET and HEC-RAS to evaluate proposed modifications to the tidegates.
