Upper Crab WatershedThis section is for reference only. The sign-up period for this watershed has closed. The total estimated area in the Upper Crab Watershed is 1,185,282 acres. The watershed is located in Adams, Grant, Lincoln and Spokane counties in Eastern Washington. The watershed is part of wind-deposited loess that covered the entire Columbia Plateau. It is surrounded by eroded Pleistocene flood channels which were formed by glacial Lake Missoula flood waters. Mean annual precipitation is 9 to 15 inches, increasing from west to east. There are around 400 farms on the 620,000 acres of cropland which makes up the largest land use in the Watershed. The average size farm is 1600 acres and the major crops are wheat, barley, and hayland. On the approximately 510,000 acres of rangeland, there are 100 ranches with an average size of the operation around 5,000 acres. Big Sage, Bluebunch Wheatgrass and Stiff Sage-Sandberg’s Bluegrass are the predominant vegetation associations.
