Nisqually Watershed
This section is for reference only. The sign-up period for this watershed has closed.

The watershed is located in Lewis, Pierce and Thurston counties in Western Washington, with a total estimated area of 460,172 acres.

The topography is comprised of nearly level to rolling glacial outwash plains as well as the foothills of the Cascades Mountains and Mt Rainier.  The area is characterized by moderate temperature and rainfall ranging from 35 -60 inches in the agricultural areas to over 100 inches near Mt Rainier. In the lower elevations of the Cascade Mountains adjacent to the Valley Foothills, the vegetation consists of Douglas-fir and western hemlock.

While forestland, both industrial and private non-industrial, is the major land use, non-forestland land uses are also well represented.  They include a diverse array of agriculture with conventional and organic fruit and vegetable farms, dairy, other livestock operations, pasture, hayland, and silage fields.  Small hobby-type operations represent the single fastest growing segment of the watershed.  Portions of the watershed are also suffering from significant pressures of urbanization.
