Dungeness-Elwha Watershed
This section is for reference only. The sign-up period for this watershed has closed.

The Dungeness Watershed is located on the Olympic Peninsula in Northwest Washington in Clallam and Jefferson counties.  The watershed is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and receives on average, 15 to 55 inches of annual precipitation within the cropland areas.   There are about 184 farms covering 23,900 acres of pastureland and cropland. Farm types include dairies, livestock farms, hay, and some specialty crops, including lavender.

In the higher elevations within the Olympic National Park and Forest, the topography consists of steep, glaciated mountains up to 8,000 ft elevation.  At this elevation the topography is characterized by rock outcrops, persistent snow pack, alpine glaciers, and glacial-fed streams.  The vegetation includes sub-alpine fir, mountain hemlock and Pacific silver fir forests as well as alpine meadows.  Sub-alpine fir occurs on the dryer soils of northeastern rain shadow areas.

The land is mostly publicly owned and is utilized as a major regional water source as well as a source for wilderness recreation.
