For immediate releaseSoil survey will enhance natural resources, military trainingSPOKANE, Wash. (July 23, 2012) – USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service announced today the availability of an updated soil survey for Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) military base. JBLM is a very active military base comprising about 90,000 acres near Tacoma, Washington. In 2009, JBLM requested the help of NRCS in updating their soil survey in order to meet compatibility requirements of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). “As a result of the new soil survey information, military training and natural resource management and protection will be greatly enhanced,” said NRCS State Soil Scientist Kevin Sullivan. “The updated information in this survey provides more accurate, detailed and accessible soils information in a digital format.” Military training interpretations for soil management will be available for the first time. In addition, the soil survey will be delivered in a digital form that JBLM can use to create more specific soil interpretations. This is a vast improvement over the previous soil survey manuscripts, which were originally hardcopy maps. The updated JLBM soil survey data is now available online through the
