Deadline for Kittitas County flooding assistance announced
Damaged irrigation systems may be eligible for funding

SPOKANE, Wash., (May 4, 2009) – Agricultural producers in Kittitas County who suffered damage to their irrigation systems or irrigation infrastructure in January of 2009 may be eligible to receive financial and technical assistance to replace or repair those systems, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced today.

“Producers have until May 15, 2009 to sign up for financial and technical assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP),” NRCS District Conservationist Doug Allen said.

Eligibility will be the same as regular EQIP except it will be limited to practices that were damaged by the floods. “There is $300,000 available for cost sharing under the initiative,” he said.

Practices that are eligible for funding include irrigation water pipelines, structures for water control, tree and shrub establishment, as well as diversions and various irrigation sprinkler systems.

Allen encourages landowners who are interested in this voluntary program to contact the USDA Service Center in Ellensburg at 509/925-8585. Additional information on EQIP and other conservation programs is available on the Web at: http://www.wa.nrcs.usda.gov under the “Programs” tab.
