The Stevens County Conservation District hosts the State FFA Land Judging Competition

Submitted by Chandra Neils, Area Resource Soil Scientist

When fall is in the air, school busses are on the road, and hot cocoa starts to sound really good, then you can be sure that the FFA (Future Farmers of America) Land Judging competitions are in full swing.  Every year dedicated teachers get their teams together and begin to teach them skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives.  The students come to the land judging events to show off their knowledge and skills in hopes of making it to the national competition in Oklahoma.

Our partners, the conservation districts, deserve recognition for sponsoring the contests.  They recognize the importance of providing a hands-on opportunity for students to apply their knowledge.  The districts work tirelessly organizing the contest and preparing for the 100 to 200 students that regularly attend.  Stevens County deserves extra praise, as this is the second competition they have hosted this year.

The day was beautiful and cool with no wind.  There were 12 schools from Eastern and Central Washington participating.  Schools sending FFA land judging teams to the contest included Colville, Deer Park, Garfield-Palouse, Harrington, Lind, Odessa, Pomeroy, Prosser, Ritzville, Rosalia, Springdale, and Tekoa.

Congratulations to all the winners!  Many thanks to Tammy Heggenberger, Dean Hyden and the rest of the Stevens County Conservation District.
